Description:

Chinese Cizhou Meiping
North China Cizhou style meiping vase
Jin to early Ming dynasty, 1115 to 15th century
Height 21 cm

From the creamy white glaze clearly stands out floral decor in black-brown iron oxide painting. The bottom is unglazed and shows the traces of cutting by string from the potter's wheel.
The term Cizhou encompasses a wide range of "vernacular" (as opposed to "courtly") ceramics from Hebei, Henan, Shaanxi, Shangxi, and Shandong, produced beginning with the Liao Dynasty (907-1125) and gradually transitioning over time into the rustic North China wares of the last century. Early cizhou pieces like this one attracted the interest of Japanese aesthetes, who recognized the bold, simple yet skillfully painted decorations as the perfect embodiment of the wabi-sabi ideal of the tea way. Through this tradition, mediated by ceramist Bernard Leach, and through archaeological finds during major railroad construction projects of the earlier 20th century, the style also exerted a strong influence on Western ceramics.
The meiping was originally a wine bottle type, but has been used since the Ming period by scholars and literati as a vase, especially for single plum branches.
