Cundo Bermúdez is one of the world's most famous and one of the most important Cuban painters of the "vanguardia"(avant-garde) of the 1940s and 1950s. Cundo was born in Havana, Cuba, in September 1914. His paintings captivate with their humorous depictions of daily life and tropical nature in vivid colors. "The joy of painting is vital for me", explained Bermúdez. "I enjoy art like Mozart enjoys his music..”
At the age of 13 he entered a high school and shortly after attended the Academy of Fine Arts (Academia San Alejandro). In 1938 he went to Mexico to learn to draw. The painter once said: He was very impressed by the subject matter of painting there. When he returns to Havana, Cundo studies, works and paints. His first formal solo exhibition is held in 1942 at the Lyceum/Havana. At this time he is inspired by the Cuban painters of the generation before. Amelia Peláez, Carlos Enríquez and others. After some trips to the United States and Haiti, the move to the Old Continent follows. Later, in the early 1950s, I went to Europe to visit its museums. I spent nine months in Spain, Italy and France. I was already influenced by modernism itself, but there I was impressed by the Spanish masters, especially Velázquez.

With this period, the sculptural modeling in his paintings gives way to a flat form and lighter colors. The typical patterns in the compositions are emphasized. If Cundo's work in the 1940s is influenced by Mexican art and Picasso, in the 1950s influences of Henri Matisse and Juan Gris with their cheerful colors come to the fore.
In 1958 Bermúdez traveled abroad and participated in several exhibitions. Returning to Cuba in 1960, he distanced himself more and more from the political environment and concentrated solely on his artistic work. He prepared exhibitions in Lima and Santiago de Chile. In 1967 Cundo leaves Cuba for good to settle in Washington, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and finally in Florida. Bermúdez died in 2008 at his home in Miami.
His works are in numerous, important public and private collections around the world. Among them, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Havana. In 1956, he won the prize of the International Exhibition of the Caribbean, sponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas. In 1973 he was awarded in the exhibition Tribute to Picasso in Washington. He has participated in the Venice Biennale and the Sao Paulo Biennale.
