Description:

Highly important Roman Lion
Veneto / Istria, 1100 - 1150
Travertine or sandstone
Length 92 cm, height 50 cm, depth 40 cm

The lion, as the protector of the Serenissima, is by far the most important sculptural object in the art of Venice. Ever since the city was founded in 697, dedicated to St. Mark as its patron saint, it has also been referred to as the Republic of St. Mark or the Republic of the Lion. The cultural expansion of Venice extended far beyond the city's borders and was, among other things, a stylistic influence on the coastal landscape of Istria and Dalmatia. The sphere of influence reached as far as Crete and Cyprus during its greatest expansion. Against this historical background, we often encounter the lion in today's Croatia. A particularly rare museum specimen of a Venetian lion is this one presented here. Not only its imposing size, but also the age-related very good state of preservation make this object a museum piece of art worthy of a collection.
