Description:

Important madonna
Rhineland/Cologne?
Around 1250
Softwood, full round carved
Height 51 cm

The standing Madonna figure (51 cm) was created in the Cologne area around 1250 and is thus part of a group of sculptures from the mid-13th to mid-14th century from Cologne. The strongly elongated figure of Mary with a short torso and long legs is particularly typical of this period. Under the long robe, the tips of the feet are visible in a slightly oblique position; the right foot seems to be slightly angled and is visible under the falling drapery. Mary also wears the typical veil over her hair, which frames her face in grape-like waves. With her left hand she holds the infant Jesus, who is also dressed in a long robe. He is slightly turned towards the mother and has raised his right arm in a gesture of speech or blessing. The child's block-like posture contrasts with the almost mannerist, youthful complacency of his mother. The stylized physiognomy is revealed by sharply ridged, sickle-shaped brows with prominent nose and short chin.
A similarly graceful posture is exhibited by the so-called Ollesheim Madonna, created in Cologne around 1260-70 (Schnütgen Museum, A 1054). Here, the elegant posture of the mother figure is particularly emphasized along with the intimate relationship between mother and child. The veil is depicted in the same way; presumably both figures originally had a crown as well. Likewise the overdrawn ornamental eyebrow parts makes the group assignable to the Cologne figures. However, this depiction shows an even greater stiffness in the subtle movements of mother and child, as well as an even less conspicuous drapery. The emotional bond between Mary and Jesus is executed in a more restrained manner, allowing the viewer greater room for interpretation. Therefore, this figure is to be dated earlier than the Ollesheim Madonna or the Madonna on Broad Throne Seat of 1270 (Museum Schnütgen A 46).
