Description:

Life-size Corpus Christi
Masterful work of the Dürer Renaissance
17th century
Carved lime wood, polychrome painted & gilt

This masterful wooden sculpture of a crucified Christ impressively demonstrates the expressive power of the Dürer Renaissance in Central European sculpture. The so-called Dürer Renaissance refers to an art-historical movement of the late 16th and early 17th centuries in which sculptors were inspired by Albrecht Dürer's powerful, anatomically precise and expressive depictions of the body. His engravings, woodcuts and drawings influenced numerous sculptures of the time, particularly in southern Germany, Austria and Bohemia.
The Corpus Christi follows the three-nail type, in which the feet are superimposed and fixed with a single nail. The body is emaciated and sinewy, the tension of the muscles and tendons is masterfully worked out. The outstretched arms emphasize the motif of suffering, while the slightly bent knees make the moment of agony palpable. His gaze is directed towards heaven - an expression of divine devotion and deepest physical agony.
The face is framed by thick, wavy hair and a carefully crafted beard. The crown of thorns is particularly remarkable, marking him as the "King of the Jews" and intensifying Christ's pain with its sculptural detail. Stylistically, the sculpture shows an interesting connection between late Gothic and the newer, baroqueizing trends of the 17th century: the strands of hair falling down the sides are still reminiscent of late Gothic models, while the moving perizonium (loincloth) with its deep, wet folds already anticipates the dynamics of the early Baroque.
This depiction of Christ thus stands on a stylistic threshold. It is not only a testimony to the virtuoso art of woodcarving, but also an impressive example of Dürer's artistic reception in the Renaissance and its after-effects into the 17th century.
