José María Mijares was an important contemporary visual artist in Cuba. At the age of 16 he received a scholarship and entered the Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro in Havana. He received his first great influences from artists of the "School of Havana": Carlos Enríquez, René Portocarrero, Cundo Bermúdez and his professors, Romañach, Menocal, Valderrama, Ramón Loy, Caravia and, above all, the painter Fidelio Ponce. In 1959, Mijares was also a founding member of what is still Cuba's most influential group of artists, "Los Diez Pintores Concretos" (the 10 concrete painters) or, as they were simply called, "Los Diez" (the 10). Although this important group existed for a relatively short time (1959-1961) and also showed works together only three times, it remains a very important part of Cuban art history. Especially in the years before Castro and in the run-up to the Cuban Revolution.

When Fidel Castro came to power in 1968, José Mijares left Cuba and gave up his teaching position at the academy. He lived in Miami and was a prolific painter until his old age of 82, when he died in Miami/Florida in 2004. In 2001, the painter was awarded an honorary doctorate of fine arts by Florida International University in 2001. He also received the Cintas Scholarship from 1970 - 1971 (Oscar B. Cintas, formerly Cuban Ambassador to the U.S., a prominent industrialist and patron of the arts).

Mijares' works have been exhibited at numerous important exhibitions in Havana, Paris, Caracas, Port-au-Prince, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, Washington D.C. and Miami, among others.
"Mijares is above all a colorist, with pure coloration forming the substance and structure of the forms of his work. Drawing usually supports the contours. Bold outlines give definition and meaning to each painting. His thematic creation is biological in nature, based on living organism. Life, which does not remain trapped in any static form, gives a poetic mystery to each and every one of his compositions! As a painter of color, Mijares continues a tradition that has long been rooted in his native Cuba. He gives new meaning to the formal language of the past, shaping it across the boundaries of time and space.
José María Mijares dies 2004 in Miami/Florida
